Himalayan Glaciers and risks to local communities

Capacity building Workshops

Since the beginning of the project, we have conducted annual capacity building workshops in remote sensing, GIS and field techniques for monitoring glacier hazards in Nepal (2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023), India (2022) and Peru (2023).

The goal of the workshops is to build institutional strength in less developed countries which are part of the IGCP 672 project. So far, a total of remote sensing and GIS trainings have been conducted for local universities and institutes in Asia and more recently South America.

June 2018: GIS AND REMOTE SENSING FOR GEOSCIENCE (2 days),  Royal Thimphu College, Bhutan

November 2018: GLACIAL LAKE HAZARD ASSESSMENT USING REMOTE SENSING AND GIS (5 DAYS), Nepal

October 2022:  Advanced Training Program on Water Resource Management, Glacier Monitoring & Climate Change Studies, Sikkim University India

Field training

November 2019: Field training on Ponkar Glacier, Nepal Himalaya (2 weeks)

September 2022: Field training on Drang Drun Glacier, Zanskar, Ladakh, India (3 weeks)

November 2023: Field training on glacier mass balance and local perceptions of change, Khumbu Himalaya, Nepal (3 weeks)
